Jaguar appears to be sitting at a crossroads regarding the next-generation F-Type. Their first option is to retain the front-mid-engined layout, while the other would alter the sports car drastically, as it would place the powertrain behind the passengers’ cell.
Details about the next F-Type are sketchy at best, but Autocar reports that designers and engineers from the British automaker are favoring such a layout, which could be electrified or even all-electric.
Former Jaguar design director Ian Callum left the company earlier this year, but previously revealed that he helped design the next-gen F-Type alongside his (eventual) successor Julian Thomson. According to Callum, it could feature some C-X75 influences.

“We could get quite close [to the C-X75],” he revealed. “There’s still a formula within Jaguar for a front-mid-engined car. I have a preference for mid-engined cars. It’s certainly something I would like to see. For an electric sports car you could make a shape like [the C-X75] with the batteries in a T or H-shape through the middle. Or you could make it as a longitudinal internal-combustion mid-engined car. It would be short enough. So the style won’t dictate the drivetrain, but the drivetrain may dictate the style.”
Jaguar has yet to determine what platform will underpin the next-generation F-Type, and given it’s current financial woes, it wouldn’t make sense to create a new platform from scratch. One possible solution would be for it to team up with BMW to develop a new EV sports car platform that could underpin the successors to both the F-Type and BMW i8 while also saving on costs. Alternatively, Jaguar may be able to modify the electric platform of the I-Pace.
In any case, the current F-Type will soldier on for three more years, with the facelifted model that’s just around the corner keeping it relevant until its successor arrives.
