Police in Australia are no strangers to driving some rather impressive performance cars, and it’s now emerged that they are using a BMW M3 in the country’s capital city of Canberra.
These images were posted online by a member of the Australian Police Vehicles group on Facebook and show an M3 with no police livery while on duty during a series of recent protests. If the car’s flashing red and blue lights weren’t on, it would be impossible to pick this M3 from any other.
This isn’t the first BMW M car to be used as a police vehicle in Australia as, earlier this year, police in the state of Victoria took delivery of a brand new M5 Competition. In comparison to the M3 pictured here, though, isn’t unmarked but clad in a blue police livery instead.

Powering the M3 is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with an impressive 425 HP. If police were to ever come across a speeding C 63 S, however, which sports a 503 HP twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, they may struggle to keep up; for 99 per cent of the time, though, we figure it should be more than fast enough.
Production of the M3 ceased 12 months ago due to the extensive changes required for the car to meet WLTP emissions regulations. Fortunately, there is a brand new one in the works that’s set to hit the market next year. It will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six as the new X3 M and X4 M and will be good for 473 HP in standard form and 503 HP in Competition guise.
