This Mazda RX-8 Wants To Be The Gorgeous RX-Vision Concept

Rewind almost four years to the day and Mazda presented the stunning RX-Vision Concept to the world, offering a sneak-peek at what a new-age sports car from the car manufacturer could look like.

While a production version of the RX-Vision has yet to arrive (and may never arrive), that didn’t stop a group of students in Japan from making the next best thing.

The creation you’re looking was built a few months ago by the creative students over at the Nihon Automobile College (NATS) for this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. It’s the same people who made the Toyota 86-based Lamborghini Urus Pickup Truck, mini-me Acura NSX and more. It started out life as a run-of-the-mill RX-8 before being outfitted with bespoke bodywork inspired by the sleek design of the RX-Vision.

Viewed from the front, it’s pretty much impossible to see any resemblance to an RX-8. There is a new Mazda grille with chrome accents similar to the RX-Vision as well as a set of sleek new headlights with curved LED ‘eyebrow’ daytime running lights. Unsurprisingly, the proportions of the car’s front fascia are way off the real concept.

Spin around to the sides and the similarities continue with bulging front and rear wheel arches. Last but not least comes the rear where you will notice a ducktail lip spoiler, four circular taillights like the RX-Vision (pictured right below), and an elongated rear window. There are also two small tailpipes finished in chrome.

The car is obviously a one-off, so just in case you’re wondering, there’s no chance the parts will be built for RX-8 owners, though, we guess some fabricators could be inspired to do the job for you.

Recently, Mazda admitted that building a new rotary sports car is a “dream” but said it was worried how such a car would be received due to the ever-increasing focus on electrified vehicles.
