In a recent interview on the Autoline Network, former GM chairman Bob Lutz addressed Tesla’s current situation within the car industry, while also completely tearing into the Model Y’s styling.

That particular segment takes place at around the 31:30 minute mark of the video, when Lutz was quoted as saying: “The Model Y, I think it is terminally ugly. I don’t know who’s going to buy that. It is another one of these humpback things like the Model X.”

He went on to say that the Model Y is “neither a sport utility nor a sedan, and to the extent it sells, I don’t think it’s going to break into a new segment. I think the sales will be largely substitutional to the Model 3’s.”

While it’s clear that Tesla tends to let form follow function, calling the Model Y “terminally ugly” might be a little bit harsh, seen as how there are plenty of compact crossovers out there that aren’t exactly what you might call gorgeous.

Lutz went on to address Tesla’s upcoming Roadster and Semi by saying: “I don’t think they are going to do that sports car anytime soon. They certainly are not going to do the Semi. If they did, they would be extremely foolish because that whole market is not enough to make a difference.”

As for Tesla having an advantage over other carmakers with regards to battery technology, Lutz believes that the EV-maker only has “more image value than an equivalent electric Chevrolet.”

“I continue to believe that, and I keep repeating ad nauseam: when it comes to electrification technology, Tesla is at exactly the same place as everybody else, they use lithium-ion. The only reason why Tesla had more range was because they had a bigger battery.”

However, as InsideEVs points out, the California-based automaker certainly has more going for it than just big batteries. They offer customers advanced technologies such as Autopilot and Smart Summon, and their cars are widely regarded as being insanely fast, practical, frugal and nowadays, well-built too.
