Euro NCAP Crash Tests New BMW 1- And 3-Series, Peugeot 208 And Jeep Cherokee

Euro NCAP, the body that conducts crash tests in Europe awarding up to five stars for its best performers, has released the safety ratings for the new generations BMW 1-Series and 3-Series, as well as the latest Peugeot 208 and Jeep Cherokee.

The two Bavarian models achieved a maximum 5-star safety rating, with the European safety specialists noting that the BMW 1-Series hatchback would have scored even better if it hadn’t missed the ‘Good’ rating for whiplash protection.

The BMW 3-Series did slightly better than its smaller sibling, achieving 97 and 87 percent in Adult and Child occupant safety, 87 percent for Pedestrian and 76 percent for the Safety Assist, compared to the 1-Series’ 83, 87, 76 and 72 percent, respectively.

“It’s good to see the premium brands, from Germany and elsewhere, maintaining the very high standards they have set for themselves and continuing to achieve five-star ratings”, said Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen. “I’m sure that BMW’s customers can be confident that the company will continue to strive for the highest standards of safety, even as our protocols get tougher and tougher.”

Tested according to an older protocol 7 years ago, the previous generation Peugeot 208 scored top marks. The new one, however, missed out on the five-star rating, getting only 4 stars. The French subcompact did well in all areas except Pedestrian safety, where it achieved 56 percent. In the Adult and Child occupants, it scored 91 and 86 percent, respectively, and 71 percent in the Safety Assist.

The Jeep Cherokee also received 4-star rating, with 80 and 78 percent in Adult and Child occupant, 56 percent Pedestrian and 69 percent Safety Assist. Euro NCAP noted the results as “good but unexceptional performance across the board”, and “a huge improvement over its larger stablemate, the Wrangler, tested last year”, which was rated at 1 star only.
