Ex-Formula 1 racer Marcus Ericsson will race for Chip Ganassi Racing in next year’s IndyCar Series in the team’s third car.
While the Swedish driver failed to enjoy the success in Formula 1 that he would have wanted, his move to IndyCar has proved more fruitful as in 2019, he competed in 16 IndyCar Series events for Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports where he scored his first podium and finished second at the race in Detroit. He has also acted as Alfa Romeo Racing’s F1 test driver this year.
In moving to Chip Ganassi Racing he will be joined by teammate and fellow Swede Felix Rosenqvist as well as five-time champion Scott Dixon.

“First of all I’m extremely happy and proud to get the opportunity to join Chip Ganassi Racing,” Ericsson said after his new deal had been announced. “It’s a team of winners and their history speaks for itself. I’m very thankful that they believe in me and I will do everything I can to make 2020 another successful year for the team. I’m also very excited to work with two of the best drivers in the series in Scott and Felix. I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve learned this year to use in my second year in the NTT IndyCar Series.”
“I think Marcus brings a lot of unique experience with him having competed in several championships around the world,” added team owner Chip Ganassi.
Chip Ganassi Racing has only fielded two cars in the IndyCar series the last two seasons after cutting back from a quartet of entries. It is exploring the possibility of signing Indy Lights champion Oliver Askew to a fourth car for 2020.
