A compact hot hatch beating a muscle car on the track? Surely there must be some kind of sorcery (tuning) involved, right? Actually, there isn’t, but then again, this is not your run-of-the-mill hot hatch, but the king of the segment, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 S.
With a whopping 415 horsepower (421 PS / 310 kW) and 369 pound-feet (500 Nm) of torque produced by a 2.0-liter, turbo-four and delivered to the road by the 4Matic+ AWD system through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the A45 S is an absolute beast in a straight line acceleration.

From rest to 62 mph (0-100 km/h), it needs a neck-snapping 3.9 seconds, 0.3 seconds FASTER than the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, and can max out at 270 km/h (168 mph).
Now, the amazing hatch from Stuttgart is very quick on the test track too, with SportAuto achieving a time of 2:00,70 at the Hockenheim GP. Professional driver Uwe Sener bravely raced it against the clock on the German circuit, beating some well-established vehicles.
According to FastestLaps, the A45 S was 0.2 seconds quicker than the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S, and half a second faster than the V8-powered Ford Mustang GT. With the same driver behind the wheel, the Alpine A110 ran the course in 2:01.90 and the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR in 2:03.60. Remember the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 Black Series? It ran the course in 2:01.93, and the Audi R8 4.2 FSI in 2:00.65.
If speaking about the impressive achievement of Merc’s hatchback doesn’t get your heart racing, then perhaps seeing the video of the run from the cockpit will. So, without further ado, head on down and click the play button.
