Porsche is adamant that the all-electric Taycan can beat its own Nurburgring EV lap record around the Nurburgring.
Not long after Tesla brought a handful of Model S Plaid prototypes to the German circuit in a bid to break the German EV’s record lap of 7:42, it was revealed that Porsche used the Taycan Turbo for its quick lap instead of the range-topping Turbo S.
There are a few key differences between the Porsche Taycan Turbo and the Turbo S. While both put out an identical 616 HP in normal mode, the Turbo has 671 HP and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque on Overboost, while the Turbo S delivers 750 hp and 774 lb-ft (1050 Nm) of torque for 2.5 second bursts. Arguably of even more importance is the fact that the Taycan Turbo S uses carbon ceramic brake as standard that would be better suited to the rigors of the German circuit.
Speaking with Cars Guide about the Taycan’s Nurburgring future, the car’s product manager Lukas Kramer said the all-electric sedan left some time on the table.
“If you have all the performance equipment and torque, there’s probably some room left,” he said.
Porsche decided to use the Taycan Turbo for its ‘Ring run because it had just completed a long test drive in the same prototype and wanted to show off the car’s breadth of ability.
“We used the same car on our own 24-hour test drive, and it was very important that the car could do both. Between the two events we just changed the tyres, we wanted the car to be in the same setup. We’re really happy with our (lap time) time. But (with the Turbo S) there would be some potential.”
