A DeLorean-inspired hovercraft featured on Jay Leno’s Garage is currently up for sale on Bring A Trailer.

The seller of the unique creation started work on it some 11 years ago and completed everything in 2012. From the outside, it looks largely identical to a road-going DeLorean DMC-12 but as you’d imagine, taking a real DeLorean, stripping out its cabin, and converting it into a hovercraft wouldn’t be cheap.

Consequently, the seller handbuilt the vehicle’s body from fiberglass to perfectly mimic the look and proportions of the car made famous by Back to the Future franchise.

Powering the hovercraft is a single-cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine at the front with 6 hp and driving a 24-inch lift fan while at the rear there is a 627 cc two-cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine delivering 23 hp and powering a larger 36-inch fan.

Making the hovercraft all the more intriguing is that it features functional gullwing doors as well as working headlights. The skirts have also been equipped with multi-colored LEDs to make sure the vehicle can’t be missed at night. The seller says it has a top speed of 31 mph (50 km/h) under ideal conditions.

Evidently, this isn’t what you’d call a ‘practical’ vehicle and it’s simply a passion project of the seller. Making a DeLorean hovercraft is an emotional thing to do, not a rational one, and the winning bidder won’t be making a rational choice either in buying it. If you want to make a splash at a local lake, this is certainly one way to do it.
