2020 Skoda Kamiq GT Unveiled As China-Only Subcompact Crossover Coupe

China is Skoda’s largest single market worldwide, so it’s no wonder that they have four high-riding vehicles on sale over there – or, rather, five, if we count the newly unveiled Kamiq GT.

Offered alongside the Kamiq, Karoq, Kodiaq and Kodiaq GT, it’s limited to the People’s Republic. It builds on the local variant of the Kamiq, with which it shares the same wheelbase although it is both longer and taller.

Compared to the regular subcompact crossover, the new Kamiq GT sports a few visual updates, like the restyled front and rear ends, with slender lighting units and new bumpers, as well as the signature sloping roofline, extra chrome trim and 17-inch alloy wheels.

“The collaboration between our design team in Mlada Boleslav and our Chinese colleagues at SAIC Skoda was extremely successful”, said the brand’s chief of design, Oliver Stefani. “Designing the Kamiq GT allowed us to develop a vehicle together that perfectly fits into the emotive design language of our SUV family and at the same time caters to our young Chinese customers’ preferences for a modern design.”

The interior carries over with only minor changes, such as the added ‘GT’ emblems on the dashboard and headrests, horizontal stripes on the seats and exclusive decorative stitching. The car pictured also features a multi-function steering wheel, single-zone air conditioning, 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife and MirrorLink, push-button start and lots of storage spaces. Moreover, Skoda is offering several options, such as a panoramic glass roof and a new exterior metallic paint finish called Modern Gold.

No details about the engine lineup have been announced yet, but the 111 PS (109 HP / 82 kW) 1.5-liter MPI unit powering the Chinese Kamiq is believed to be on the list, probably alongside the 1.2-liter turbo that kicks out 116 PS (114 HP/ 85 kW). Finally, transmission options should include a 5 and 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT.
