BMW has an extensive range of plug-in hybrids, as their lineup currently includes quite a few of them. From the 3-, to the 5- and 7-Series, X5 and even the 2-Series Active Tourer, all of them are available with PHEV powertrains, and it seems that Munich’s offerings could expand.
Quoting sources from BMW with knowledge on the matter, BMWBlog believes that the 3-Series could get yet another PHEV. The model is thought to utilize the 320e moniker, slotting under the 330e, which combines a 2.0-liter turbo-four gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total output of 248 hp (252 PS / 185 kW) and 309 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque.

To their knowledge, the entry-level electrified 3er might pack the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine and an electric motor. However, it will be different than the combo found in the 225xe Active Tourer and MINI Countryman, where it develops 221 hp (224 PS / 165 kW) and 284 lb-ft (385 Nm) of torque, as the latter two are based on a front-wheel drive architecture, whereas the 3-Series is rear-wheel drive. The output should stand at around 200 horsepower, allegedly.
If the information checks out, and we did reach out to BMW hoping for a clarification but got the “no comment on potential future products” reply, then the 320e is thought to be unveiled in the third quarter of next year.
Other Bimmers believed to get plug-in hybrid versions are the 1-Series and X8 M. The first one should launch under the M140e moniker, with a 2.0-liter four-banger and an electric motor making around 400 hp, whereas the latter might use a V8 and an electric motor for up to 750 hp.
