No matter how you may feel about the new Toyota Supra, its design, or its BMW underpinnings, it’s impossible to deny that it is an important car in the history of Japanese sports cars. Toyota took the covers off to the latest-generation Supra earlier this year after years of waiting and teasing. It features styling inspired by the memorable FT-1 Concept from a few years back and shares its underpinnings with the new BMW Z4.

Toyota’s Mk4 Supra was made particularly famous thanks to its use of the 2JZ twin-turbocharged inline-six engine that had massive tuning potential. By comparison, the new Supra features a single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six sourced from BMW that’s good for 335 hp and 365 lb-ft (495 Nm) of torque, although tuning companies have already started to show that it can pump out considerably more than that with limited modifications.
Various dyno tests have also indicated that the aforementioned claimed figures are quite conservative, going some way to explain how the Supra can launch of the line and hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4.0 seconds in ideal conditions.
