With the new S6 out, Audi has drawn a thicker line between the usual A6 models and the RS6, especially in Europe, where it’s now available solely with a diesel engine. That’s right, while most automakers are shedding the oil burner weight, Audi is not ready to do that just yet.
At least not in the Old Continent, as in America, Asia and the Middle East, you can get the S6 with a 2.9-liter, twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine that makes 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.
Anyhow, the Europe-spec S6’s electrified 3.0-liter V6 TDI generates 349 PS (344 hp / 257 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It’s matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission and permanent Quattro all-wheel drive, a setup that lets it hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds for the Sedan and 5.1 seconds for the Avant. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) in both cars.

Audi has managed to retain the refinement of the A6 and combine it with a meatier response on the go. Thus, the S6 doesn’t feel like a big 2-ton (~4,400 lbs) car, especially when you shift into the Dynamic driving mode that sharpens everything up. The steering response is quite good and the gearbox suits the engine in a very lively manner. The car reviewed below rides on massive 21-inch rims, and does it without compromising the ride too much. Comfort can be further enhanced with the optional air suspension, whereas handling can become more engaging with the available dynamic all-wheel steering.
If you’re familiar with Audi’s latest models, then you know what to expect inside: the same great build quality, very good front and rear space and the typical layout that makes occupants access the second screen positioned below the infotainment system to control the HVAC. This may seem like a nightmare to do while driving, but the big virtual buttons and haptic feedback make it quite intuitive.
So, is the new S6 TDI worth your hard-earned money? The answer is a big ‘yes’, but you may want to scroll down and check out the review just to make sure.
