Maserati is working on an all-new sports car and the company has released official ‘spy photos’ before actual spy photographers got the chance.
The company isn’t saying much about the car, but they confirmed the mule is testing a new powertrain that has been “developed and built” by Maserati. The automaker went on to say the powertrain will lead to a new family of engines which will be exclusive to the trident brand.
Little is known about the new engine family, but the mule appears to be based on an enlarged version of the Alfa Romeo 4C. That doesn’t necessarily mean Maserati is working on a mid-engine sports car, but it’s certainly an interesting choice.

The mule will now rack up countless miles of testing and Maserati says data acquired from this will be combined with information gathered from driving simulators. This will then be used to help “fine-tune and develop … prototypes with final bodywork and mechanics.”
Maserati was coy on specifics, but the mule is testing the powertrain that will be used in their all-new sports car. The company released an audio teaser earlier this month and it will be unveiled in May of 2020.
The company hasn’t said much about the car, but it was previously known as the Alfieri until Maserati decided to drop that name and start referring to it as the “all-new sports car.” Besides the mysterious internal combustion engine, the model will be offered with an electric powertrain that has “ultra-fast” charging capabilities, a long range and unique driving modes.
Little else is known about the car, but Maserati previously suggested the model would ride on an aluminum space frame platform. The EV variant was also slated to have three electric motors, all-wheel drive and 800V battery technology like the Porsche Taycan.
