Mazda Didn’t Expect The Skyactiv X Engine To Be So Popular

Mazda said that demand for models fitted with its innovative Skyactiv X powertrain in Europe has been much stronger than originally anticipated.

The Japanese car maker is currently offering this engine option on models like the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, as well as the new CX-30 compact SUV.

“Since we launched the engine, we are seeing a very encouraging feedback: 60 percent of the orders for the Mazda3 are currently for cars equipped with the Skyactiv-X engine, as well as 45 percent of orders for the Mazda CX-30 crossover,” Mazda Europe CEO Yasuhiro Aoyama said to Automotive News.

Aoyama added that he expects the new CX-30 to become Mazda’s best-selling model in Europe next year, taking that title from the CX-5, the brand’s current champion.

The Skyactix X engine features what Mazda calls spark plug controlled compression ignition; in plain English, Mazda’s engine combines the spark ignition of a normal petrol unit with the spark ignition of a diesel to achieve an up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Mazda says that the Skyactiv X combines the free-revving character of a petrol engine combined with diesel-like fuel economy and low emissions.

Apart from the magic compression tricks, the 2.0-liter Skyactiv X also features a supercharger and a mild-hybrid 24-volt system, producing 177 HP (180 PS) and 165 lb-ft (224 Nm) of torque. Fuel economy in the Mazda3 is rated up to a combined 52.3 mpg UK (43.5 mpg US/5.4lt per 100km) while CO2 emissions can drop as low as 96 g/km, depending on wheel size and transmission type.
