While this driver’s quick thinking helped them avoid what could have been a really serious crash, lady luck also played a part as, thankfully, there weren’t any other vehicles in the opposite lane.
The incident took place on November 12 in Yasothon, Thailand (hence the left lane driving), in what appears to be the early hours of the morning. What’s clear though is that the driver of that pickup truck had to have run a red light in order to cut the cammer off like that.
Starting with the obvious, one could argue that the cammer definitely reacted as well as can be expected given the circumstances. People don’t generally expect somebody to run a red light and cut them off so brazenly. Also, simply hitting the brakes might not have been sufficient given factors the close distance and well as the car’s velocity.

In the end, when faced with such a decision, fast reflexes and quick thinking will definitely come in handy, even if it’s just instinctual. It’s also good that the driver didn’t lose control, in what was pretty much a moose test type of scenario.
In the U.S., fatalities from red light running are said to be at a 10-year high according to an AAA study, with data from 2017 showing a 28% increase over 2012.
