The 2020 Toyota GR Supra has lapped the Nurburgring in 7:52.17 while being tested by Sport Auto during the German publication’s Hot Lap Supertest at the circuit.
Toyota spent a considerable amount of time testing the new GR Supra at the ‘Ring, but has never published an official time. Thus, this lap, set by Sport Auto test driver Christian Gebhardt, reveals for the first time how fast the Supra is at the circuit.
A time of 7:52.17 puts the Supra just ahead of the BMW M2 Competition, in which the publication posted a 7:52.36 lap. It is also a touch faster than the best time of 7:55 set by the BMW Z4 M40i.
A Different Kind Of ‘Test’: 2020 Toyota Supra Driver Floors It, Crashes Right Into A Tree
Earlier this year, the Supra’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, told Road and Track the sports car could lap the Nurburgring in 7:40. If Toyota itself were to spend a few days testing and perfecting the Supra to the track like many manufacturers do, there’s little doubt it could eclipse the single flying lap time set by Sport Auto.
Either way, a time of 7:52.17 is very respectable, especially for a car said to produce ‘only’ 335 hp from its BMW-sourced, single-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, even though dyno tests have indicated that Toyota’s claimed peak horsepower figure is a little conservative.
It’s worth pointing out that, unlike so many other production cars competing for lap times at the Nurburgring, the new Supra isn’t a track-focused sports car and is more suited towards street performance.
