The BMW X2 was about to pop its zero-emission cherry with a battery-electric model, allegedly due by 2021 or shortly after. However, it seems that the Germans have only tested the waters with the prototype brought forward by our spy photographers last week, as the ix2 reportedly won’t happen.
Quoting company insiders, BMWBlog reports that there are no plans for a battery-electric X2, claiming that the previous information was “incorrect”. Unfortunately, there’s no way of verifying the (alleged) new information at the time of writing, but we did contact the automaker and will update this article with their answer.

As far as the scooped prototype goes, it had ‘Electric Test Vehicle’ stickers on the outside, although it did try to pass as a plug-in hybrid, with the xDrive25e badge on the tailgate and a fake exhaust pipe. The bumpers were also different compared to the ones of the PHEV, which we know for sure that is happening, and it retained the fuel filler cap and plug-in port on the right rear fender and left front one, respectively.
While the X2 won’t (supposedly) ditch the ICE in a zero-emission model, the X1 will apparently go down the electric lane. The next-gen premium subcompact crossover is said to be roughly two years away, and will be joined by a battery-electric derivative. The new 1-Series, which is based on the same underpinnings as the latest X1 and X2, will also get a BEV variant.
