2020 BMW X2 Going Under The Knife For A Minor Facelift

BMW is working on plug-in hybrid and electric versions of the X2, but now spy photographers have snapped photos of the facelifted crossover.

Caught being transported on a car hauler, the updated model has a familiar design but features a host of minor changes.

One of the most noticeable updates is an all-new grille that hides behind snout-like camouflage. While we can’t see what hides underneath, we wouldn’t be surprised if the facelifted X2 has a larger grille than its predecessor.

Besides the new grille, the X2 will feature modestly revised headlights and a redesigned bumper. The latter will eschew prominent fog lights as the ones pictured on this prototype are just a sticker.

The rest appears to carryover, but this is an early prototype. As a result, the production model could feature more extensive changes including a new rear bumper and restyled taillights.

The cabin isn’t visible, but changes are expected to be relatively minor. That being said, the model could adopt a digital instrument cluster and an updated infotainment system.

Under the hood, we can expect an assortment of familiar petrol and diesel engines. Choices should largely carryover, but it’s possible some many receive minor modifications for improved performance or better fuel efficiency.

Besides the conventional powertrains, we can expect a plug-in hybrid that features a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol three-cylinder petrol engine, a rear electric motor and a 9.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This setup should give the model a combined output of 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS) and 284 lb-ft (385 Nm) of torque.

Less is known about the upcoming electric variant, but it will likely use the same powertrain as the upcoming i1.
