General Motors is set to lay off 814 workers from its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant starting on February 28th, 2020.

The car manufacturer issued a notice to its workers at the site earlier this week detailing the job cuts. This decision will also see the final Cadillac CT6 roll off the production line in January, while the final Chevrolet Impala will leave the facility on February 28.

A Second Chance: GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Plant Saved By UAW Agreement, Will Reportedly Build An Electric Pickup

“As previously announced, production of the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6 at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly will be complete in early 2020,” GM spokesman Dan Flores said. “We have job opportunities for all D-Ham team members covered by the UAW-GM National Agreement. We expect to have opportunities in Michigan and Ohio.”

Flores added that of the employees being hit with layoffs, 753 are represented by the UAW. They will be offered buyouts or jobs at other GM facilities. These job offers will start in January. On March 2, 31 hourly and salaried workers will be laid off from Detroit-Hamtramck while on April 3, a further two staff will lose their jobs.

GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck site has been under huge pressure this year and the company originally wanted to end production at the site in June. However, in negotiations between the UAW and GM, it was agreed upon that the site will remain open and start producing an electric vehicle, likely a pickup truck. Additional electric vehicles could be built at the site from 2021 and according to one person familiar with the plans, it’s possible that the Hummer brand could be revived at that facility, USA Today reports.
