Holden Commodore To Continue Racing Despite Production Car Retirement

Shortly after it was confirmed that the Holden Commodore will be discontinued in Australia next year, it’s been revealed that the sedan will continue to race in the country’s Supercars championship for two more years.

Recently speaking with Car Sales, the head of the Red Bull Holden Racing Team, Roland Dane, revealed that the Commodore will continue to race through the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The car’s future in 2022 remains undecided, as the sport will introduce a new generation of cars that year dubbed Gen3.

“Nothing has changed. Nothing has changed in our world,” Dane said. “The fact is that we have a deal for the next two seasons and the ZB will be on sale during one of those seasons and not the other.”

A similar thing happened when the Ford Falcon was killed off in Australia, as it continued to race in the country’s leading motorsport class for two years. The Falcon has since been replaced by the Mustang in Supercars and, in its first season this year, dominated the field.

As for the 2022 season and beyond, Dane said a plan is already being put together with General Motors about what car the outfit will race. Dane ruled out the possibility of it being the Camaro, but said The General does have something in its portfolio that could fill that role.

“Camaro is not part of the regular Holden line,” he said. “[However], GM have got something else in mind for the Gen3. But it’s for them to comment, not me.”
