A woman in Brooklyn was killed early on Sunday morning when a drunken off-duty NYPD officer driving a 2019 Nissan GT-R T-boned a 2012 Mazda6.

The New York Post reports that 47-year-old NYPD officer Rohan Shaw hit the side of the Mazda after it ran through a stop sign on East 55th Street. The impact reportedly sent the Mazda spinning into a telephone pole.

After the sedan came to a rest, the driver fled the scene, leaving behind a number of seriously injured passengers. One of them, a 23-year-old woman, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Another passenger in the car, a 22-year-old woman, is in a critical, but stable, condition at Kings County Hospital.

The office reportedly refused to take a Breathalyzer test at the scene and failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, speed and driving while ability impaired. He has also been suspended without pay pending an investigation.

Just one day after the crash, however, all charges against Shaw were dropped due to “insufficient” evidence. However, a law enforcement source told The New York Post that he is “still not off the hook” and “could still face charges down the line.” Police are yet to catch up to the Mazda6 driver who fled the scene.

Images of the crash show that the GT-R suffered serious damage across its front end while the driver’s side of the Mazda6 was caved in.
