Ex-Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica who made a surprise return to the sport at the start of the 2019 season, but failed to net good results, is set to drive a BMW M4 DTM at the championship’s rookie test at Jerez in December.
The Polish driver has said he would like to secure an F1 simulator role for the 2020 season while also participating in a dedicated racing program elsewhere after losing his seat at the Williams F1 team to Nicolas Latifi. Kubica made a name for himself on the international motorsport stage while racing for BMW Sauber between 2006 and 2009.
“I would like to thank BMW Motorsport for the opportunity to test at Jerez with the BMW M4 DTM,” Kubica said. “I am already very much looking forward to the test and to getting to know the DTM race car with its turbo engine. I can well imagine a future in the DTM. I am looking for a new challenge, and the DTM is certainly just that. The series has a top-class field and the standard of driving is extremely high. However, we must first wait and see how I get on at the test.”

Audi claimed all three titles during this year’s DTM championship and it is understood that BMW is undergoing a review of its structure and driver line-up. Autosport reports that this could open up the door to a race seat for Kubica, should he perform well during the Jerez test.
“We are delighted to offer the opportunity to Robert Kubica to take part in the Jerez test,” BMW motorsport boss Jens Marquardt said after news of the test broke. “Robert is a big name on the international motor racing scene, with a lot of experience in high-class series like Formula 1.”
It is believed that Kubica may also test for the customer WRT Audi squad, which finished seventh in the 2019 teams’ championship, trailing the Audi Sport Team Rosberg, Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, and Audi Sport Team Phoenix outfits that finished first, second, and third respectively.
