The new generation Suzuki Jimny has tried on a police livery, only this time it’s for real, as it has joined the Carabinieri.
Italy’s police force signed a contract for 10 units of the Jimny and has already taken delivery of the first one, which wears the specific dark blue livery adorned with white and red accents and ‘Carabinieri’ decals all around. The tough little off-roader is also equipped with emergency lights and strobes and has been modified to suit the needs of the country’s officers.
Built using a body-on-frame chassis, the fourth generation Jimny can tackle arduous terrains with ease. That’s because it features a four-wheel drive system, long-travel suspension and low-range gearbox, things that other subcompact SUVs lack.
Driven: 2019 Suzuki Jimny Is Impossible Not To Love
Where the new Jimny itself is found lacking is in performance, as the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces only 102 PS (101 hp / 74 kW) and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque that’s mated to either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. As for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time and top speed, let’s just say that it won’t break any records; but then again, that was never its intended purpose.
Aside from the lovable tiny Japanese SUV, the Carabinieri will also be using another vehicle from Suzuki: the Ignis. 55 units of the city car will be patrolling the streets and just like the Jimny, these too have been modified, getting the police livery, emergency lights and other features needed to help officers fight crime.
