One of the things lacking from the Tesla Cybertruck prototype recently presented to the world was a windshield wiper. According to Automobile Magazine, that might be because the electric car manufacturer is in the midst of re-inventing the windshield wiper and could debut its design on the Cybertruck.

A patent recently discovered by the publication, which was first filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in March 2019 and published in September, showcases a design using a single wiper that runs along a pair of tracks at the top and bottom of the windshield, allowing it to move horizontally across the glass. The system uses electromagnets in these rails to send the wiper back and forth.

Changes Afoot: Aussie Safety Body Has Serious Concerns About Tesla’s Cybertruck

By comparison, normal windshield wipers sweep along the glass in a large arch. In theory, Tesla’s system does have some advantages, namely the ability to reach even the upper corners of the windshield that are usually out of reach. Tesla’s patent also asserts that the electromagnetic wipers are more energy-efficient than typical motor-driven wipers and require less juice from the battery.

Tesla says the design would work particularly well on complex windshields with elaborate curves. However, Automobile Magazine rightly points out that the flat windshield of the Tesla Cybertruck could be the perfect testbed for such a wiper design. It should be easily to implement and when not in use, the single wiper blade could be neatly incorporated into one of the A-pillars.

Will it happen? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it’s clear that Tesla is still looking for ways to innovate.
