A recent study commissioned by AutoTrader has revealed that the UK’s most popular new car is the Volkswagen Golf, for the second year running.

The research, which included analysis of over 38 million new car ad views online. The report also shows the most desirable car brands of 2019, as well as standings for various sub-categories such as “Most Popular Eco Cars”, “Most Popular New Car Features” or “Most Desirable New Car Colors.”

With the Golf clearly no.1 in terms of ad views (1,307,303), places 2 through 10 were occupied by the following nameplates, in this exact order: Ford Focus (846,212), Ford Fiesta (721,306), Range Rover (617,085), Range Rover Sport (591,323), BMW 3-Series (562,523), Mercedes A-Class (541,700), Range Rover Evoque (525,550), VW Polo (463,548), Mercedes C-Class (460,924).

Moving on to the year’s most desirable new car brand, that honor went to Audi with a total of 4,814,795 ad views since this past January. BMW placed second with 4,037,641 views, VW third with 3,419,722 and Mercedes fourth with 3,371,803. These numbers indicate that the public responded very well to Audi’s latest models (hence the carmaker’s latest design language).

“Audi’s performance shows the strength of its brand across all classes and price brackets. From the A1 to its prestige and electric models, it has something to appeal to all tastes and budgets.  Audi performed particularly well with drivers aged 34 and under, highlighting its status as a brand to which many younger motorists aspire,” stated AutoTrader’s Rory Reid.

He then added: “The most popular electric cars are consistently outscoring petrol hybrids for desirability in the eco ranges, suggesting a change in the nation’s tastes for more environmentally friendly cars and the impact of a wider roll out for charging points. For example, the top scoring electric model, the Audi E-Tron, gained 7% more interest than the top petrol hybrid, the Toyota Corolla.”

As for which colors UK buyers prefer most, 21% would rather have a black car, or statistically speaking, a black Volkswagen Golf, followed by a Blue one (19%), Silver (16%), Red (11%), White (10%) and Grey (9%). It’s also clear that people in the UK generally don’t want colors such as Yellow (2%), Gold (1%) and Orange (1%) on everyday passenger cars.
