Toyota Corolla Ditches Petrol Option, Becomes Hybrid-Only In The UK

Toyota UK is retiring the single petrol option of the Corolla, making the compact hatchback a hybrid-only model.

For the 2020 model year, the range of the Toyota Corolla is now offering just the 120 HP 1.8-liter and 181 HP 2.0-liter hybrid powetrains while Toyota is adding the new GR Sport and Trek models. The turbocharged 1.2-liter unit, the only model available with a manual transmission in Europe, is being discontinued.

The new Corolla GR Sport will play the role of the sportiest model in the range, at least until Toyota decides to give us a proper hot hatch version. The new version features model-specific styling, including sharper-looking bumpers, honeycomb pattern for the grille’s mesh, piano black details and new 18-inch alloy wheels with red center caps.

Inside the Corolla GR Sport you’ll find sports seats dressed in black fabric with leather-like bolsters and plenty of red stitching. Standard equipment includes a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, an infotainment system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a color head-up display, LED headlights, Toyota Safety Sense and more.

The new Toyota Corolla Trek will be offered in a wagon bodystyle exclusively; the Japanese manufacturer partnered with renowned bicycle maker TREK for its creation, with the end result posing as the more rugged, crossover-like version of the Corolla.

The more rugged looks come courtesy of the fender mouldings, silver-finished bumper under-runs and are combined with a 20mm suspension lift and 17-inch alloy wheels. The cabin features two-tone fabric upholstery and a subtle wood trim on the dashboard.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is now on sale, with the new GR Sport and Trek models to start deliveries in January.
