Automotive juggernaut Toyota has just announced a new program to license its intellectual property to interested parties.

The program, dubbed Toyota IP Solutions, will offer licensing of Toyota patents in four key areas: Omnidirectional Structural Color, Bio-Active Material, Nano-Material Synthesis and Electronics Thermal Management. In the future, Toyota will look to add more patent portfolios.

Toyota’s Omnidirectional Structural Color portfolio showcases innovative pigment compounds capable of reflecting specific wavelengths of light to create vibrant and deep colors from all viewing angles, while the Bio-Active Cleaning Materials showcases rare compositions of enzymes capable of breaking down organic materials, making stains and spills much easier to clean.

The Nano-Material Synthesis showcases novel compositions and methods that provide for quick and cost-effective production of high purity nanomaterials of virtually any chemical element or alloy. Last, but not least, is the Electronics Thermal Management portfolio that includes cooling strategies which can be integrated into a power-dense electronics system to quickly and efficiently control and dissipate heat generated by said system.

Intellectual property licensing allows a copyright owner, Toyota in this case, to give another party permission to use some or all of its intellectual property rights while still retaining ownership.

“As one of the world’s leading patent providers, our intellectual property spans a wide range of technologies,” Toyota Motor North America chief administration officer for manufacturing and corporate resources Chris Reynolds said. “We’re excited that the various technologies now being offered via the Toyota IP Solutions program are not limited to the automotive industry and many can be applied to other products.”
