Customers in Germany can now order a new VW Golf Mk8, which at this phase is offered with four engine options and a new ‘Life’ trim.
Volkswagen has revised the structure of the Golf’s range, which will eventually include four trim levels; the base ‘Golf’, the aforementioned ‘Life’ and the range-topping ‘Style’ and ‘R-Line’.
The base ‘Golf’ grade, which is expected to be priced at under 20,000 euros ($22,200) when it launches in early 2020, will pack a lot of standard features, including Car2X, Lane Assist, Emergency Braking Front Assist that includes City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian & Cyclist Monitoring, a digital instrument cluster, an infotainment system with mobile online services, automatic air-conditioning and LED headlights and taillights.

The ‘Life’ adds the Discover Pro infotainment system with voice control, Dynamic Road Sign Display, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, wireless smartphone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay, chrome interior trim, Park Distance Control and automatic lights. The new Golf ‘Life’ with the 130 PS 1.5 TSI starts from 27,510 euros ($30,510) in its home market.
The engine range of the Golf Mk8 is offering two petrol and two diesel options during this launch phase, including the 1.5-liter TSI petrol with a cylinder deactivation system in two power outputs -128 HP (130 PS) and 147 HP (150 PS)- and a new 2.0-liter TDI diesel, also in two power outputs – 113 HP (115 PS) and 147 HP (150 PS).
The diesel engine is a new unit that features Double AdBlue Injection, which, according to VW, reduces NOx emissions by up to 80 percent. Overall, the new 2.0-liter TDI claims a 17 percent reduction in fuel consumption.
Both TSI engines and the base TDI are fitted with a new six-speed manual transmission that further reduces CO2 emissions, with the more powerful 150 PS TDI model offered exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch.
VW promises to add more powertrain options early next year, including a powerful plug-in hybrid unit with around 242 HP (245 PS).
