Volkswagen has offered a glimpse of the new generation Caddy while also announcing that the light van in both commercial and passenger variants will be unveiled in February, 2020.
The official (and as always, exaggerated and far away from reality) sketches preview the new design that draws from other VW models like the latest Golf, complete with a smaller grille at the front, angular headlights with LED DRLs and a chrome strip joining them together, and sporty air intakes in the bumper.
As we’ve seen from recent prototypes, the production model is in no way as sporty or dramatic as the sketches suggest, featuring a very conservative and sensible design befit of a practical light commercial vehicle stemming from a German automaker.
Review: Is There A Place For A VW Caddy In The Current SUV-Infested Market?
At the back it will come with a squared window, partially outlined by a light strip, slim LED taillights and a clean looking bumper. Large wheels will be offered in upper specs and swing doors will be an option.
Beneath the skin lies the VW Group’s MQB platform, which is highly versatile and supports multiple wheelbase lengths of the new Caddy. The engine lineup will include a host of petrol and diesel engines, some of which might are likely to be shared with the eighth-gen Golf.
The compact hatchback can be had with the 1.0 and 1.5-liter gasoline burners, making between 90 PS (89 hp / 66 kW) and 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW), respectively, as well as a few of diesels that punch out 115 PS (113 hp / 84 kW) and 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW). The Golf is also available with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, although we don’t know whether they will carry over to the new Caddy.
