The iconic 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in Bullitt sold for $3.74 million including the buyer’s premium at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2020 sales event over the weekend.

This Mustang was the ‘hero car’ of the iconic film that featured what many experts consider to be the first modern-day car chase scene in a film. There were two Mustangs used during filming of this scene, with the example in question being used for the majority of scenes and driven extensively by McQueen.

A host of modifications were made to the hero car to make it feel all the more authentic. For example, its badges were removed, the front grille was blacked out, and the paint was scuffed. Additionally, the engine was modified to be more powerful and deliver an even more intoxicating note. The car also features a number of exterior camera mounts that made shooting the high-speed scenes of the film possible.

After its movie duties were over, the car was sold to Robert Ross, a Warner Bros. employee who used it as a commuter. In 1970, it was sold to Detective Frank Marranca who later sold it for $6,000 to the late Robert Kiernan in 1974.

In 1980, the car’s clutch went at 65,000 miles (104,607 km) and it was left to rest in a garage. It sat at various properties until 2001, when Kiernan and his son decided to start working on the car to make it driveable. The car was eventually returned to roadworthy condition and shown to the world at the Detroit Auto Show in 2018 alongside the new Mustang Bullitt.
