The new generation Skoda Octavia RS (vRS in Britain) is long overdue, yet if the latest report stands correct, then it could be unveiled later this year.

Expected perhaps at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the 2020 Octavia RS could get a plug-in hybrid version, reports AutoExpress.  Quoting company execs, the report said that the sportiest version of the Octavia might use the same powertrain as the new Volkswagen Golf GTE.

Its German counterpart packs the 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine and a small electric motor that comes from the facelifted Passat GTE. In the latter, it churns out 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) in total, and is shared with the 2020 Superb iV. The 13 kWh battery pack gives it a 56 km (35 miles) full electric range in the WTLP test cycle.

Nonetheless, the Octavia RS could enjoy slightly more oomph, with the system output probably standing at over 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) and the maximum torque at 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), or slightly more. Nought to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) should take approximately 7 seconds, a bit more than the petrol-powered variant, which is estimated to have similar power, but weigh less, as the electric motor and battery should bump the weight by 250 kg (550 lbs). No manual option is reserved for this model, as a dual-clutch automatic is thought to be the sole gearbox offered.

Those looking to save money on fuel will get to order the diesel-powered Octavia RS, which might use the 2.0-liter TDI of its predecessor, probably making up to 200 PS (197 hp / 147 kW). The 2.0-liter twin-turbo oil-burner found in the Kodiaq RS, rated at 240 PS (237 hp / 177 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, is said to have been ruled out.
