The BMW M2 Competition and Toyota Supra are two of the most thrilling and exciting sports cars on the market but which is faster around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca? Motor Trend has the answer.

During the publication’s search for the Best Driver’s Car of 2019, the Supra and M2 Competition were hustled around the circuit back-to-back by racing driver Randy Pobst.

On paper, the BMW has the obvious advantage. Powering the potent M2 is a detuned version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder found in the previous-generation M3 and M4. It cranks out a total of 405 hp.

By comparison, the Toyota Supra also uses a BMW 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine but makes do with a single turbo and produces a claimed 335 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. However, we know that the horsepower and torque figures spruiked by Toyota are very conservative and that the Supra has more grunt than claimed. Even still, the M2 Competition has a clear advantage. On the track, this didn’t matter.

At the hands of Pobst, the Supra lapped Laguna Seca in 1:40.57 compared to the 1:40.83 of the M2 Competition. That’s a very good result for the Toyota and just goes to prove that horsepower and torque figures aren’t the be-all and end-all.

Pobst also preferred driving the Supra on the circuit, describing it as a “pleasure” to toss through the corners despite it being a little prone to oversteer.
