Infiniti is the latest to join an increasing number of manufacturers moving from monthly to quarterly sales results, with the first one for 2020 to be issued on April 1, just like it’s parent company Nissan. [Updated 1/31/2020]
The BMW Group as well as Nissan have decided to join the likes of Porsche, GM, FCA and Ford in switching from monthly sales reports to quarterly ones.
While Nissan will make the switch on April 1st (no, for real), BMW is moving on with this global strategy effective immediately, and will report their first-quarter sales for the U.S. in April, as per Autonews Europe. BMW’s decision affects it’s own brand, as well as Mini.
“BMW Group remains focused on profitable growth,” according to a BMW of North America spokesman. “To further emphasize our focus on profitability, BMW Group has made the decision to report all sales and financial figures in alignment across all brands and regions on a quarterly basis, beginning in this financial year.”

Meanwhile, Nissan spokesman Chris Keefe had this to say about his company: “We think it’s a good way for us to provide a clearer picture of the sales performance over a longer period of time. There’s a lot of monthly variances in sales – there’s spikes and troughs. We think this will just smooth those.”
BMW’s decision to switch to quarterly sales reporting is said to be unrelated to the SEC investigation into the automaker’s U.S. division’s sales practices, stated the company’s spokesman.
“The decision to move from monthly to quarterly sales reporting was made on the Group level and affects all brands and sales entities around the globe. The decision is being announced now to coincide with the new financial year.”
As for BMW’s German rivals, while Porsche is also looking to go from monthly to quarterly U.S. sales report, Mercedes-Benz USA is sticking to the old format for the time being.
“Monthly sales figures rarely capture the overall picture of how our business is developing,” stated Porsche Cars North America boss Klaus Zellmer.
