With all the recent hype surrounding the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, you could be forgiven for thinking it is the brand’s range-topping performance car. It isn’t, as that mantle is still held by the Ford GT that will remain in production for a few more years.
Both the Shelby GT500 and Ford GT offer blistering levels of performance, so, eager to find out which the quickest off the line, Brooks from Drag Times pitted the duo together for a series of drag races on the street.
The Mustang Shelby GT500 has a serious power advantage over the mid-engined GT. It features a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that’s good for 760 hp, resulting in a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint of 3.3 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.6-seconds at 133 mph (214 km/h).

By comparison, the Ford GT is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 647 hp and 550 lb-ft (745 Nm) of torque. Ford claims that the supercar can hit 62 mph in less than 3 seconds, despite its huge power deficit to the GT500.
The two drag races held between the pair both took place on an empty stretch of road that doesn’t seem all that sticky. Consequently, the GT500 suffered from a huge amount of wheelspin as it picked up speed. The Ford GT, meanwhile, faced no such issues and puts its power to the ground much more effectively, allowing it to easily win this duel.
