General Motors has released the first teaser image of their electric pickup truck.
The image isn’t very revealing, but it shows the model will have a long sloping hood and a rakish windscreen. There isn’t much else that can be discerned from the picture, but the vehicle appears to be a crew cab pickup with a relatively short bed.
The image was released as part of the announcement that GM is investing $2.2 (£1.6 / €2) billion into its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to produce a variety of electric trucks and SUVs. The pickup is slated to go into production in late 2021 and will soon be followed by the Cruise Origin.

As we have previously reported, the pickup is expected to revive the Hummer moniker. An announcement could come on February 2nd as GM has reportedly tapped LeBron James to star in a Super Bowl commercial confirming Hummer’s return.
Besides the Hummer truck and Cruise Origin, the plant is expected to build electric versions of the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Sierra. Both are rumored to go into production in 2023.
The Detroit-Hamtramck plant was originally slated to close last summer, but GM extended production of the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6 until February of this year. The facility was later saved as part of the company’s contract with the UAW.
Once the plant is reconfigured and fully operational, the facility will employ more than 2,200 people. The automaker is also investing an additional $800 (£613 / €726) million in supplier tooling and other projects related to the launch of the electric pickups.
In related news, GM noted their joint venture with LG Chem is investing $2.3 billion (£1.7 / €2.1) to manufacture battery cells in Lordstown, Ohio. These will then be shipped to Michigan where they’ll be installed in vehicles manufactured at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
