There seems to be a record or an award for everything these days and Hyundai has absolutely no qualms about jumping on any bandwagon and promoting anything with its name on.
This time, it’s pumping its chest for setting a Guinness World Record for driving a Kona Electric at a peak altitude of 5,731 meters (18,802 feet), the highest altitude reached by an electric car, because you know, that’s of practical importance nowadays.
The South Korean car manufacturer set about breaking the previous feat of 5,715.28 meters (18,750 feet) as part of a marketing campaign to promote the electric crossover in India. The record was performed at Sawula Pass in Tibet.

“Hyundai KONA Electric making to the prestigious Guinness World Records feat is a very proud moment for everyone and remarkable feat for HMIL,” MD and chief executive of Hyundai Motor India, S S Kim said. “KONA Electric has brought Electric Revolution by demolishing various myths about electric vehicle and is a true expression of Hyundai’s spirit of staying ahead of the curve. Under the Emission Impossible Mission, KONA Electric has proved its mettle in the world’s toughest terrains without compromising its performance.”
What’s that you’re thinking about the lack of chargers? No worries, Hyundai used a number of portable chargers along the route to ensure the Kona Electric didn’t run out of juice on its journey.
“A new precedent has been set for the record as – Highest Altitude reached in an electric car,” Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath said. “I would like to congratulate Hyundai Motor India for having achieved this and setting new benchmark in the annals of history.”
The Hyundai Kona Electric features a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor at the front axle with 201 hp and 291 lb-ft (394 Nm) of torque. The crossover has an EPA-rated driving range of 258 miles (415 km) and can be charged to 80 per cent capacity in 54 minutes.
