A lot of mystery surrounds the mid-ship Maserati prototype recently teased by the automaker but Car and Driver believes it could preview a new production model.
The Italian marque shocked the world when it previewed its upcoming sports car with a camouflaged mule, saying it was testing a new powertrain developed and built in-house. Car and Driver understands that the engine in question is likely a turbocharged V8 although specifics about the powertrain remain unclear.
One thing that’s particularly obvious about the mid-engined prototype is that it’s using the carbon-fiber tub of the Alfa Romeo 4C, albeit one that’s been heavily modifed with wider tracks and probably a longer wheelbase.
The curious thing about the Maserati in question is that it hasn’t appeared in any recent Maserati product timelines and comes out of the blue. According to a company spokesperson, it will launch prior to a new SUV and a replacement to the GranTurismo hitting the market. A convertible version of the mid-engined sports car is also said to be on the cards.
Prior to Maserati recently altering its road map of future models, it was understood that its latest sports car would come in the shape of a production-ready version of the front-engined Alfieri. Last time we heard about it, the Alfieri was going to hit production featuring an electrified powertrain.
All is set to be revealed in May 2020 when Maserati will reveal its brand new sports car, so stay tuned.
