Mercedes-Benz is recalling approximately 745,000 vehicles across the United States over a sunroof issue.
In a letter published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it is revealed that the bonding between the glass panel and sliding roof frame may deteriorate, possibly resulting in the glass panel detaching from the vehicle. If the sunroof is to fly off, it could become a serious road hazard for other motorists.
In total, there are 744,852 vehicles being recalled in the United States.
Included in the recall are select Mercedes-Benz C-Class models from 2001-2007, select CLK models from 2003-2009, CLS models from the 2006-2011 model years, and certain E-Class models from the 2003-2009 model years. It remains to be seen how many Mercedes-Benz vehicles in international markets suffer from the same issue.
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealerships will inspect the glass panel bonding and replacing the sliding roof if necessary. The recall is expected to begin February 14, 2020.

This recall comes shortly after it was revealed that Mercedes-Benz agreed to pay as much as $20 million in penalties for violations on how it operated its vehicle recall program. An investigation from the NHTSA found the German car manufacturer missed the 60-day deadline to notify owners of select recalls, failed to upload required comments to the web, and didn’t inform the NHTSA within the required five days.
The company must pay $13 million immediately while the remainder is deferred in case there are additional violations.
