Volkswagen has been doing a poor job at keeping the performance versions of the eighth-gen Golf under wraps, but we cannot complain.
After the leaked picture showing the back end of the GTI, we now get another image that puts the spotlight on the Golf’s entire performance lineup. Shared online by CocheSpias, the alleged road map reveals the outputs of the new Golf GTI, GTI TCR, GTD, GTE and R.
These are measured in kW and see the entry-level Golf GTI enjoying 180 of them or 241 HP (245 PS). The more performance-focused Golf GTI TCR has 221 kW (296 HP / 300 PS), while the diesel-powered GTD and plug-in hybrid GTE will supposedly arrive with 147 kW (197 HP / 201 PS) and 180 kW (241 HP / 245 PS), respectively.

Sitting at the top of the range is the all-wheel drive Golf R, which will boast 245 kW (328 HP / 333 PS). If the numbers are correct, that’s a 17 kW (23 HP) boost over the outgoing iteration, which enjoys 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) of torque, accelerates from rest to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds and maxes out at 168 mph (270 km/h) with the optional Performance Pack.
The power output is nonetheless far from some initial estimates that expected the next-gen Golf R to pack around 400 HP from Audi Sport’s 2.5-liter five-pot. Still, the technological advancements will make the new model far quicker than its predecessor.
The all-new Golf R could premiere at the 2020 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, while the Golf GTI is believed to debut about a month from now, at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
