Rivian has said that prices for its all-electric R1T and R1S will be lower than initially expected, Reuters reports.
While showcasing prototypes of the R1T and R1S at a recent event in Mill Valley, California over the weekend, Rivian founder and chief executive R.J. Scaringe said a mid-range R1T will start at around $69,000. That’s the figure originally shared by Rivian but it was thought to reflect a base-spec, entry-level R1T, and not a “well-equipped vehicle” as Electrek has been told.

Scaringe said the Rivian R1T starting at around $69,000 will come outfitted with a special glass roof that can change from clear to tinted blue. A similarly-equipped R1S SUV should start at about $72,000.
Now, what does that mean for the base-spec model and the entry price? Without additional information, we can’t say – those extras could be worth $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 or even more. It’s all speculation at this point, but the bottom line is it will be lower than $69,000.
The company’s founder declined to say just how many $1,000 refundable deposits the company has received for its vehicles but said the reaction has been “really positive,” adding “so we’re excited by that. But we now have the challenge of a lot of pre-order customers aren’t going to get the cars as fast as they like because there’s such a long queue.”
Customer deliveries of the Rivian R1T will start before the end of the year while the R1S will land shortly after.
A host of variants will be offered. Kicking off the range will be entry-level models that use a 105 kWh battery pack and four electric motors to deliver a combined 402 hp and 412 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque. Sitting in the middle of the range will be a 135 kWh version with 753 hp and 825 lb-ft (1,120 Nm) of torque. The range will then be topped out by a 180 kWh version with 700 hp and 825 lb-ft (1,120 Nm) set to offer the most range.
