Back in 2006, Robert Kubica made his F1 debut with BMW-Sauber, a swiss-based outfit now known as Alfa Romeo. This year, the Polish driver will join said team in a reserve capacity, backing up Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Coincidentally, Kubica’s arrival at Alfa Romeo follows Polish petroleum company Orlen becoming a co-title sponsor for the team, with the squad now called Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen.

“I am really happy to be starting this new chapter in my career as I join Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen,” said Kubica.

“This team holds a special place in my heart and I am pleased to see some faces still here from my years in Hinwil. Time and circumstances are obviously different, but I am convinced that I will find the same determination and hunger to succeed. I am looking forward to helping Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen make the next step forward.”

Kubica finished the 2019 Formula 1 season in 19th place in the drivers’ standings, scoring a single point through a P10 finish in Germany – his teammate George Russell finished the year with zero points.

Meanwhile, Alfa team boss Frederic Vasseur is thrilled with his new signing, stating that Kubica’s experience will be a valuable asset for the Swiss outfit as they attempt to build on their eighth place finish last year.

“He is a driver that needs no introduction: one of the most brilliant in his generation and one who displayed the true meaning of human determination in his fight to return to racing after his rallying accident,” said Vasseur.

“His feedback will be invaluable as we continue to push our team towards the front of the grid.”
