Ordinarily, we would recommend petrolheads steer away from BMW M3 Convertible models and instead opt for the lighter and more rigid Sedan and Coupe variants produced over the years. This E46-generation BMW M3, though, is a little different.
Currently up for auction on Bring A Trailer, this E46 M3 Convertible has received a series of modifications from aftermarket specialist Dinan.
Collector Frenzy: A BMW M3 E46 Just Sold For $90,000, Will This Become The New Normal?
Most notably, the car’s 3.2-liter S54 inline-six engine has been fitted with a Dinan supercharger, a Dinan intercooler, new throttle bodies, an ECU flash and an aftermarket exhaust system. No power and torque figures are mentioned in the listing, but those eyeing the potent droptop will be pleased to know that it features a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. It also underwent a service in October 2019 that saw it receive new belts, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, alternator, battery, and fan clutch.
Complementing the Dinan engine work is a new suspension kit, Brembo brakes and forged 19-inch wheels. The listing fails to mention what condition the rod bearings, sub frame, and Vanos system are in, three common areas of concern buyers of used E46 M3s need to look out for, although we guess any potential buyer will check them out before shelling out the cash.
Visually, the M3 looks to be in fantastic condition despite having 67,000 miles (107,826 km) on the clock. In particular, the grey leather interior still looks very nice and none of the dashboard plastics appear overly worn. The car is also being sold with both a removable hardtop and the standard cloth soft top.
