No matter how much power a car has from the factory, you can rest assured that some owners will want even more performance. Just take this Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, for example.
Powering the range-topping pony car is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine with 760 hp. That’s Lamborghini Aventador SVJ levels of power making for one incredible machine. However, for Pennsylvania tuning firm Evolution Performance, 760 hp wasn’t enough.
Eager to take the GT500 to new heights, the aftermarket specialist outfitted it with a ported supercharger and a new pulley, bigger injectors, a larger fuel pump, new headers, an X-pipe, and a tune that allows it to run on race fuel. The result is quite astonishing and the car now churns out 945 hp at the rear wheels. Factor in a 15 per cent drive loss and the car’s upgraded engine may, in fact, have up to 1,086 hp on tap.

The result of all this power means the car was recently able to launch down the quarter-mile in a blistering 9.939-seconds at 140.43 mph (226 km/h). To put that into perspective, a bone stock GT500 set a 10.728-second quarter mile last month.
There’s no doubt that as more and more Mustang GT500s reach the hands of customers, owners will rush to tuning shops around the U.S. to make the phenomenal Mustang even faster. To extract the most out of Ford’s 5.2-liter V8 engine, we wouldn’t be shocked to see some companies ditch the standard supercharger in favor of a twin-turbocharger setup.
