What’s faster in a straight line; the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 or the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat? This video answers that question.
During Jason Cammisa’s recent test of the flagship Ford Mustang at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, the two animalistic muscle cars were lined up for a sprint down the quarter-mile. The runway where the race was held was not a prepped drag strip so the times recorded for both cars were slower than they could manage on a surface with more grip.

In the race, it is the Mustang that gets off the line far quicker than the Dodge. It’s unclear if this is simply because the Ford’s launch control system is that much more effective than the Dodge’s or if the man behind the wheel of the Hellcat, racing driver Randy Probst, just had a poor launch. In either case, the Ford was able to retain the lead it established in the first few seconds of the race, storming down the quarter-mile in 11.4-seconds at 132 mph (212 km/h) compared to the 11.7-seconds needed for the Hellcat.
Neither of these times are overly reflective of what the two are capable of. Dodge quotes a quarter-mile time of 11.2 seconds for the Challenger SRT Hellcat while recent tests of the GT500 have shown it can dip into the 10.6-second and 10.5-second mark at a drag strip.
Of course, neither of these quarter-mile times rival the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon that can run the quarter-mile in 9.65-seconds.
