BMW’s next-generation M4 Coupe was spied testing again, this time in Sweden’s winter wonderland, though it’s impossible to tell if this prototype features the M-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive system. You see, aside from the xDrive version, BMW will also offer a (kind-of) back-to-basics model with rear-wheel drive, a touch less power and a manual gearbox aimed at purists and internet commentary warriors alike.
The standard xDrive M4 will feature a similar all-wheel drive system to the one found in the larger M5, offering the ability to push up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear axle.
Power will come from the 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six used in the X3 M and X4 M, where it kicks out 480 PS (473 HP / 353 kW) and up to 510 PS (503 HP / 375 kW) in the Competition variant. Output is expected to be retained at the same levels for the xDrive M4 channeled to all four corners through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new mechanicals will make the sports coupe a capable all-year and -weather machine, while the rumored rear-wheel drive version will target purists.

The prototype that became the focus of our spy photographers’ camera still had the heavy camo on, with a few cutouts at the front, where the controversial long-nose or kidney grilles are found (check them out here), and on the bumper. The slim headlights with incorporated LED DRLs are partially covered up, alongside the new taillights that sport a distinctive signature.
The model-specific M body kit that will draw a clear line between the standard 4-Series Coupe and the M4 will include more prominent bumpers on both endswith machine side skirts, a discrete duck lid spoiler and beefier fenders. The diffuser at the back leaves room for the quad exhaust pipes while completing the design will be the M wheels and badges.
Production of the new M4 Coupe is expected to commence close to the end of the year, with the car to likely make its debut in the summer, followed later on by the soft-top convertible body style.
