The Hyundai Elantra received a controversial facelift for 2019, but it appears the redesigned 2021 model will be a head turner.

Caught undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden, the redesigned sedan will be heavily influenced by the stylish Sonata. That’s clearly visible up front as the sedan appears to adopt a “digital pulse cascading grille” just like its larger counterpart.

The rest of the front end is heavily camouflaged, but we can see slender headlights and vertical air intakes. Moving further back, there’s a rakish windscreen and an upward sweeping beltline. The model also has a sporty roof and stylish five-spoke alloy wheels.

There isn’t much to see out back, but it appears the rear end will follow in the footsteps of the Sonata. Details are hard to make out, but we wouldn’t be surprised to find an integrated rear spoiler and wraparound taillights.

It’s hard to tell by the images, but it appears the Elantra could grow in size. That seems possible as the 2020 Sonata is 1.8 inches (46 mm) longer than its predecessor and features an additional 1.4 inches (36 mm) of wheelbase.

Of course, we can also expect a significantly improved interior with higher quality materials and a more modern design. We haven’t seen photos yet but, if it follows in the footsteps of the Sonata, it could have a freestanding infotainment system, a minimalist dashboard and a push-button gear selector.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but we can expect SmartStream petrols and possibly even an N or N-Line variant. There have also been rumors about a plug-in hybrid variant, but nothing is official as of yet. However, we might not have to wait much longer to find out as the car will reportedly be introduced later this year.
