A bizarre scene unfolded earlier today in Kansas City as the Chief’s Super Bowl parade was transformed into a police chase.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, a vehicle broke through a barrier at 8:12 a.m. local time this morning. Following the incident, all officers on the route were notified.
This allowed the department and members from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office to deploy Stop Sticks to blow out the vehicle’s tires. They worked as planned, but the driver of the Ford Taurus didn’t give up. Instead, they proceeded down the parade route and turned on a street lined with fans.

Given the danger, officers gave chase and setup up a road block. Thankfully, that wasn’t necessary as police were able to use a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver to bring the car to a halt.
Two people were taken into custody and the Kansas City Police Department said the driver is “under investigation for impairment.” This seems to suggest they were possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Authorities added that no weapons were found inside the vehicle and there aren’t indications of terrorist activity. They went on to say the route was secured and they don’t have a motive at this point.
No injuries were reported and it appears the police department has a sense of humor as they tweeted “We stop fleeing cars AND do cheerleader duty.” The latter was accompanied by a video showing police surrounded by cheering fans.
