The McLaren Sport Series will be celebrating its fifth anniversary later this year and it appears the company has begun working on a hybrid successor.
As you can see in these spy photos, a mule was caught making a pit stop and it looks like a fairly typical 570S at first glance. However, a closer inspection reveals an assortment of carbon fiber components, a high-mounted dual exhaust system and “MV614 Hybrid Prototype” badging.
While that’s pretty interesting, it’s nothing compared to what was shown on the digital instrument cluster. As you can see, it showed a stylish sports car with a front fascia that echoes 720S. Besides the distinctive headlights, the model has a prominent splitter and a ventilated hood that resides between bulging fenders.

Moving further back, there’s flowing bodywork in the same vein as the Elva and Speedtail. We can also see muscular rear haunches and a rakish windscreen.
Given the prototype is believed to be a mule for the next-generation Sport Series, this could be our first look 570S successor. If that’s the case, we’re pretty excited.
Little else is known about the model, Autocar noted McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt has previously said the replacement for the Sport Series – which currently includes the 540C, 570GT, 570S, 570 Spider, 600LT and 600LT Spider – will be introduced later this year. The publication believes the model could be a plug-in hybrid that uses a new V6 engine. The PHEV part seems possible as the prototype had two ‘gas’ caps and one of them could be hiding a charging port.
