Mercedes waited for this year’s Chicago Auto Show in order to unveil its first modern pop up camper van aimed at the U.S. market. Dubbed ‘Weekender’, this van was built by Driverge Vehicle Innovations, a partner of Mercedes-Benz MasterSolutions.
According to the German carmaker, this is a very adaptable vehicle. You can use it not only for extended road trips, but also quick weekend explorations or as a comfortable place to relax after a surf or climbing session.
“Pop up campers are iconic and highly functional vehicles,” said Mercedes-Benz USA Vans exec, Robert Veit. “We have known for a long time that this market need was unmet as evidenced by the high demand for aging existing camper vans still on the road. With the help of our partners, Peace Vans and Driverge, we have utilized the Metris to create a product suited to those who seek adventure, but also need a versatile and comfortable vehicle for their day-to-day lives.”

Meanwhile, optional extras include Off-Grid Power and Integrated Solar Panels, upgraded audio and sat-nav features, various personalization options in terms of body wrap materials (clients can choose between 200 available colors), a pull-out rear kitchen, roof racks and a few camping upgrades such as an awning for shade and rain protection or mosquito screens for the rear hatch and sliding doors.
“From adventure seeking millennials to hip retirees, everyone is craving authentic and connected experiences to nature,” said Peace Vans president Harley Sitner. “Small camper vans, like this exciting new Metris Weekender from Mercedes, hits a very large sweet spot in the market. The demand we see for these products is exceptional and the feedback from renters and early adopters is fantastic. Being experts in pop up campers, we are confident Mercedes has a fantastic product that is going to delight an entire new generation of road trippers.”
Aside from the standard camper features, the first 100 customers will also get a free National Parks Pass.
